Re: Jeremy's scholarship, VE Day, and being asked to give Wright Brothers lecture in Washington (Letter, June 1945)

My dearest Mother,

Thank you for the handkerchief and your good wishes. Your present was a very welcome one.

There are two items of new this week –

Jem has won a scholarship to Westminster! The examination is called the Challenge and the competition is pretty keen. We are all very pleased. He will start next September, and, as a King’s Scholar, he will live in College and wear a gown in school. I believe the scholarship is worth about £100 a year.

The school will be back in London when Jem starts. Both of the boys will be boarding, but they are allowed to come home on Saturday evenings if they get back to school in time for Monday morning’s work.

Christopher came home on Saturday for a long VE-day weekend. Marjorie met him at Paddington & they had lunch together. Then they met me and we went to the Royal Academy. Then we had tea at the RAC, & went to the theatre to see ‘Jacobowsky & the Colonel’. Then to dinner at the Park Lane and home to bed. To-day we all three went down to see Jem at Haywards Heath – lunch in a nice little hotel at Linfield, then to Brighton, back to H.H., and then the three of us came home. Christopher goes back on Tuesday.

The other item of news is that I have been asked to give the Wright Brothers Lecture in Washington in December. This is the premier lecture in American aeronautics, like the Wilbur Wright Lecture here. It is a very considerable honour. All being well, Marjorie will come with me.

My broadcast is postponed until June 22nd at 7.30. All the talks were thrown out by the election broadcasts. I don’t think that there will be any further postponements.

We were sorry to hear of your trouble with your leg. It is very difficult for you and I do hope there will be some improvement soon.

I hope Loo & Kathleen had a nice time at Weston. If this reaches you before they leave, give them our love.

Take care of yourself

Your own loving son
